With E3 2015 right around the corner, developers and publishers are putting the finishing touches on their big reveals and gameplay demos. This year’s show promises to be a big one, with the focus placed squarely on current-gen games, many of which look to be major system sellers.

Some publishers and developers, however, are playing the long con, by teasing their upcoming games a few weeks out of their big E3 reveals. 2K Games, for example, has an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) called Advent that is slowly generating buzz around the Net.

When first revealed, Advent seemed like a teaser that could fit any number of franchises. Some thought 2K might be hinting at a new BioShock, while others presumed the ARG was the precursor to a new IP, something that 2K Games would eventually confirm during one of the major E3 2015 press conferences.

Now that the Advent ARG has evolved, however, it seems more and more likely that 2K Games is teasing a new XCOM game; that is, if some pointed clues are to be believed.
After remaining static for the last few days, the Advent teaser website changed this week to feature a giant symbol comprised of mostly red text. Within the symbol, gamers can read the phrase “lies” repeated over and over again. However, that’s not all that’s in the symbol; there is also the phrase “Gene Therapy” in the center with a link to a PDF and a series of black letters scattered throughout.

It’s pretty obvious that 2K Games is trying to provide further clues with the phrases and the black text, and one eagle-eyed fan was able to put all the seemingly disparate pieces together and come up with the phrase “Vigilo Confido.”XCOM fans will recognize this as the phrase attached to the main patch of the XCOM units.

It’s hardly a smoking gun, but it appears that a set of clever gamers have been able to make quick work of 2K Games’ teasing. We’re sure that when publishers set out to do this sort of thing they hope the clues leave gamers scratching their heads for several days, but that’s simply not the way things work in this interconnected day and age.

Sometimes even a major leak spoils a carefully planned viral teaser campaign, like what happened with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and sometimes the extensive knowledge of the Internet just comes out of nowhere and surprises us.

So, the main takeaway is that a new XCOM game is very likely in development, and will probably be announced whenever the Advent ARG concludes. We don’t actually know when that it is, but it’s sure to be, at the very latest, before E3 begins.

What do you hope to see from a new XCOM? Did you hope the Advent ARG was for something else?
