A newly-announced Steam Deck verification system will show players which Steam titles are able to run on the portable console. Valve's upcoming system will allow players to experience Steam games on the go, with powerful hardware and unique controls allowing access to a large amount of titles. A recent teardown of the Steam Deck showed off the portable PC's hardware, giving gamers a glimpse at its raw power.

Announced this past July, Valve's Steam Deck will give users access to Steam's digital library of games within a small handheld package. The system's design is quite reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch, with a large central screen surrounded by joysticks and buttons. However, in order to allow access to PC games designed for complex mouse and keyboard controls, the Steam Deck boasts a wide array of inputs. Joysticks, multiple face buttons, back buttons, touchpads and a touchscreen will all serve to make even the most complex titles playable. However, Steam Deck still will not run every Steam game, with some games rendered inaccessible due to the console's design or Proton compatibility software.

Valve has now announced the Steam Deck's verification system, which will tell gamers which titles can be accessed using the portable PC. This system will arrange games into four different tiers including Verified, Playable and Unsupported titles. Verified games have been thoroughly tested on Steam Deck and function flawlessly on the upcoming system. Playable games can be accessed on Steam Deck, but will require certain accommodations such as altered controller configurations. Unsupported games, such as games that require virtual reality hardware, can not be played on Steam Deck at all. Finally, Unknown games are those that have simply not yet been tested on the Steam Deck by Valve.

While not every Steam game will be accessible on the Steam Deck, the upcoming handheld's internal hardware is capable of running even the most modern of titles. Recently-released games such as Ghostrunner and Jedi: Fallen Order are Verified on the system, meaning they can run without needing any adjustments from the player. The current-gen version of The Witcher 3 can even run on Valve's new console, demonstrating that the small portable system can handle even the most taxing PC titles without much issue.

As a portable console capable of running a huge selection of PC titles, Valve's Steam Deck almost seems too good to be true. While not every game in the digital library will be accessible, the verification system will allow players to very easily see which games are a good fit for the system. Even games that aren't verified may still be playable, requiring only minor tweaks from the player in order to experience them on the go. Future Steam Deck updates may even make a wider breadth of games playable, allowing gamers to take even more experiences wherever they please.

Steam Deck will begin shipping in December 2021.
