While Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners are still waiting to join the fray, Mortal Kombat X has been delivering bone-crunching ultra-violence to current-gen and PC players for the past six weeks — and we’re still seeing new kombatants added into the mix.

The first DLC fighter was Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th series of movies, who brought his trademark machete and hockey mask along with him — as well as his knack for invincibility. Now, we’re about to see another new character released as part of the Kombat pack: Tanya, first introduced in Mortal Kombat 4.

Mortal Kombat X players have already been given a sneak preview of Tanya thanks to her appearance in the game’s story mode — but her role is little more than a cameo, so her moveset and fighting style is still something of an unknown quantity. However, that’s all set to change very soon.

Series co-creator Ed Boon took to Twitter yesterday to confirm that Tanya will be showcased by the game’s developers on June 1. The first look will come as part of a Kombat Kast gameplay stream scheduled to air at 3PM CDT on NetherRealm Studio’s official Twitch account.

We learned earlier this week that Tanya will be made available to download for Kombat Pack owners on June 2, so it seems that this stream will offer up some last-minute hype for the game’s most invested fans. Everyone else will have to wait another week until the character can be downloaded individually on June 9.

Tanya will be accompanied by a Klassic Skins Pack that offers new outfits for Kano, Liu Kang and Sonya Blade inspired by the original Mortal Kombat. It is thought that this content will be included in the Kombat Pack, but otherwise will be offered as a paid download, unlike the individual free skins being handed out with patches.

There were many critics of the DLC strategy being employed for Mortal Kombat X ahead of the game’s release, but in practice it seems to be working rather well. The content so far has been well-made and reasonably priced, and the steady stream of new additions has certainly done its part to keep players invested in the game.

Maintaining a strong community is particularly important for a genre that relies on competition as much as fighting games do. Whether it’s online or in person at tournaments, titles like Mortal Kombat X live and die based on how interested fans are — and it certainly seems that, in this case, plenty of people are very interested indeed.

Mortal Kombat X is available now for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are still scheduled to be released.
